Mija, You Were Built to Lead
A Latina leadership book built on five flames — la chispa, la voz, la mesa, la guardia, la herencia. Read the opening chapter below, then walk the whole book chapter by chapter.

The Doorway
I spent years standing in doorways, memorizing rooms I had been taught to admire from the outside.
I knew how to be useful. I knew how to prepare twice as much, arrive early, keep my voice even. What I did not know — what nobody said out loud — was that the room was waiting on me. Not on a version of me with the accent sanded down and the stories left in the car. On me.
My mother led without a title. She ran a household like a district office, negotiated with landlords the way others negotiate contracts, and made decisions with a kind of certainty I later saw described in leadership books as "executive presence." No one ever called her a leader. She simply was one, every day, in Spanish.
So when I finally sat at a conference table and heard myself say, "I disagree," I was not becoming someone new. I was returning to a lineage. The fire was not something I had to build. It was something I had been carrying, quietly, since childhood — and had been told, gently and often, to lower.
This book is about raising it again. Not louder for the sake of noise. Clearer. Five flames run through every chapter: la chispa, the spark that moves you before you feel ready; la voz, the voice that stops translating itself; la mesa, the table you set instead of wait for; la guardia, the peace you protect so you can lead for decades and not months; and la herencia, the inheritance you pass forward.
You will not find permission in these pages. Permission was never the missing piece. You will find language — for what you already carry, and for what you are about to build.
Mija, you were never too much. You were built to lead.
